Manawatu Open 2018

July 24th 2018

The Manawatu Open this year had 101 smallbore entries and 6 Air Rifle.

Air Rifle is down considerably from last year - the lack of Ranges, Clubs and Competitions is having a very marked effect on attendance.  Owen Bennett was once again our Men’s Air Rifle Champion although Lachie McNair improved 14 points on last year’s score.  Jessica Riddle took first place in Qualification but local girl Meaghan Reesby won the Elimination Final becoming our Women’s Air Rifle Champion for 2018.

One pleasing fact in this year’s competition is the amount of entries in D Grade, well up on last year.  Mia Welsh-Duffin was on fire, winning with a very impressive 293.10, with Stephanie McNair and local shooter Christie Peterson, in her first Open, close behind.  Christie was able to win the D Grade Final.

C Grade entries were down but local, Christian Hayes from Bulls, won the Match, and the C Grade Final was won by Elizabeth Taylor.

B Grade entries were up slightly and Greg Bengston from Dannevirke, who was last year’s D Grade winner, continued his form in winning the B Grade and also taking out the B Grade Final with an impressive 198.10.

A Grade was won by Raewyne Simpson from Wanganui with Kelly Burdon from Wellington a couple of points behind.

Local Shooter Janet Hunt from Rongotea won the Master Grade, a point ahead of Bruce Marchant with Roy Herbison only 1 inner behind.

The Top Ten shoot off for the Manawatu Open was very close with only 2 inners separating the top three shooters. In the end Grant Taylor came from fifth place to secure the title of 2018 Manawatu Champion.

Thanks to all those shooters that travelled to our Championship and the Manawatu members who helped to run the shoot.  A special thank you to Alison Fursdon for running the Air Rifle Competition.
