It is with sadness that we advise of the passing of Stewart Townshend

Stewart Phillip:
Passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Strathallan Life Care, Timaru, on Friday, 8 October 2021. Aged 80 years. Dearly loved husband of the late Nola. Loved father of Elizabeth, James, David, Alastair, Phillip, Richard, Susan. Loved father-in-law of Kevin, Faith, Regina (dec), Kirsty, Neil and Kathleen. Adored grandpa of his 18 grandchildren. Loved brother of Faye (dec) and Lance, Helen and Maurice, and Pamela and Godfrey. In lieu of flowers, donations to St John Ambulance would be appreciated and may be left at the service. The Service celebrating Stewart's life will be held at Aoraki Funeral Services Chapel Waimate, 11 John Street, Waimate, on Wednesday, 13 October 2021 at 2.00pm. TSNZ

Elected on to the TSNZ Executive in 1985 and served on the Executive until he was elected Deputy President in 1991.

His position as Deputy President was contested in 1993 but he won the election.

In 1994 he nominated for the position of President after the retirement of John Sherring but lost the election, his time on the Executive finished in that year.

Inter-Island Indoor:

Stewart represented the South Island 11 times from 1980-2000, and was Captain of the South Island Team from 1982-84.

He was a New Zealand Rep 8 times during that period.

Inter-Island Outdoor:

South Island Rep 7 times from 1981-1993, and was Captain in 1985

New Zealand Slazenger Rep 6 times during that period.

 

Waimate hosted a successful Inter-Island match in 1984 at the Waimate Stadium where the South Island won the match, the first time since 1961 and Stewart was the major force behind this.
