The Dewar Match is an annual postal smallbore prone rifle competition organised by the National Smallbore Rifle Association, UK. The Match was first contested in 1909.  Australia, Canada, Ceylon, Great Britain, New Zealand, South Africa, and the USA have, at some point, competed for the Lord Dewar Cup.  New Zealand last competed in 1994, but following on from the success of holding the women’s dual range Randle Match for the past four years, after 31 years we are now looking to reinstate shooting the Dewar at our TSNZ Outdoor Nationals, starting with 2025 in Tokoroa.

The course of fire is a Single Dewar which is 20 shots at 50 yards and 20 shots at 100 yards,  shot outdoors on NSRA approved targets.  Each team has 20 shooters and two reserves, and is an Open (i.e. mixed gender) team.  A Captain and Manager are also appointed.  The team must shoot the Match together on the same range on the same day, and may be coached.   Shooting positions and equipment must comply with NSRA rules, which are equivalent to TSNZ Indoor Rules.

The 2025 New Zealand Dewar Team will be selected as follows:

As the Dewar Match is scheduled to be held as the first event at the TSNZ Outdoor Nationals, a pre-selection process based on a ranking list using a points system will apply.  This system has been devised so that the effects of any good or bad weather conditions at matches are negated, as is the number of entries.  It includes all matches held during the season, whether Designated or not, so that all shooters have the best chance to acquire points.     Shooters must complete a minimum of three matches to qualify for team selection.

The Dewar Team Match Points Ranking List

A Ranking List of all shooters competing at TSNZ Outdoor Open events on the official TSNZ Calendar and held during the 2024-25 Outdoor season from 1 October 2024 up until the match immediately prior to the Outdoor Nationals will be compiled.

Both Designated and non-Designated matches will be included.  Closed, restricted, or Club matches will not be included.

Those matches marked in decimals will use decimal scores for points calculation, and those marked in whole scores will use whole scores.

Points will be awarded for each match as follows:

The difference between the highest and lowest scores will be calculated and then divided into 10 brackets.

Shooters will be awarded from 10 points for a score in the highest bracket progressively down to 1 point for a score in the lowest bracket.

Each shooter will have their total points divided by the number of matches they have shot, with the result presented to two decimal places (eg 8.33) as their Points Ranking Score.

Ties will be separated by countback of Points Ranking Scores from the most recent back until the number of Scores from the shooter with the least number of matches completed has been used.  The scores do not need to come from the same matches.  If a tie still exists the shooters will be ranked by TSNZ Trophy Steward and Life Member Bruce Marchant, who among other things will take into consideration the number of matches each has shot.

The shooters with the top 22 Points Ranking Scores after the Mana Open Championship who are able to attend the Dewar Match and Practice on 15 – 16 February 2025 at the TSNZ Nationals in Tokoroa will be named as the TSNZ Dewar Team.

The Captain will be the shooter with the highest Ranking score. The Manager will be appointed following the selection process.
